To the north of the Maidan is the SHAHID MINAR (Martyrs’ Monument) (1828) a column 152 feet high, designed by J.P. Parker who successfully combined different architectural styles and elements. It was built in honor of Sir David Ochterlony’s victory at the Nepal War (1814-16). Major political rallies are frequently held around the Minar, as also an impromptu mela (fair) on Sundays.
RAJ BHAVAN (1803), the official residence of the Governor of Bengal, is situated in an enclosure of 6 acres at the northern end of the Maidan. Built by Lord Wellesley at an outrageous expense that also cost him his job, it was modeled on Lord Curzon’s home at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire. Considered the best example of Georgian architecture in India, it contains many works of art, some of which are of great historic interest. The throne of Tippu Sultan is sometimes displayed in the throne room. The crystal chandeliers were bought in 1801 at the sale of General Claude Martin’s effects at Lucknow.
